Alfaisal University Researchers Patent “Organs-on-Chips” Innovation

Alfaisal University congratulates Dr. Qasem Ramadan, Assistant Professor of Research (Chemistry), and Dr. Mohammed Zourob, Professor of Chemistry, on winning a patent for their invention: “Structure & function of modular microfluidic device for in-vitro modelling of human organs.”

This invention introduces a new generation of miniaturized “organs-on-chips” that replicate the structure, function, and cell communication of human organs in vitro.

The device’s core innovation is a microengineered 3D platform that:

  • Positions different human cells in close proximity, separated by porous barriers for natural signal exchange.
  • Integrates microfluidic channels to simulate blood-like flow, creating a dynamic, physiologically relevant environment.

This innovative technology—funded by an Alfaisal University Internal Research Grant (IRG 23418) offers a powerful new tool for drug screening and disease modeling.
